Barnsley Trials Club News Letter 2009 Season
We
are coming to the end of another event packed season and we hope that
everyone has enjoyed the programme of events put on this year. With the
Novice and Beginners series, the Club Championship series, the summer
evening series and barbecue, the charity event at Doncaster Moto, a
practice day, the forthcoming Christmas Trial and of course the 2 Day
Fun Trial at Westwood we will have held 25 events. The club has been
getting very good turn outs in both the series events with a big
improvment this year in the number of adult and youth beginners riding
on the White route of the Nov / Beg series which is especially
gratifying. We hope that we get a good turnout to the Awards evening and
this year which will be held at the Dale Tavern at Worsborough on the 6th
February tickets are available £7 each. We have also seen the club
become a Ltd company this year and we have seen the financial position
of the club improve , “not bad in a recession”.
A
hardcore of people have worked hard to organise and put on all these
events and this year we have over 300 paid up club members but we still
see the same old faces at the monthly club meetings at the Dards pub and
doing the setting out for the events, taking the entries etc. We need to
get more people involved and participating so that we can keep the
quantity and quality of events as high as we do. Please come and get
involved in the meetings and the running of the club and contribute in
any way you can, please feel free to talk to any of the club officials
or simply attend any of the monthly Club meetings which are held on the
first Tuesday in the month at the Dards 8.00pm start.
A
contentious subject is of course our sport and how it is viewed by
others. We have to ensure that we promote our sport, and act, in a
professional and responsible manner and take account of the views of
those with environmental interests at the forefront of their priorities;
the land we use is also their recreational area in which they have a
vested interest. We are fortunate enough to be supported by a forward
thinking Barnsley Town Council who realise the importance of what we do
in encouraging people to take up this sport in an organised manner in
compliance with national legislation and local bylaws, it was after a
great deal of lobbying by one of the clubs founder members that Barnsley
Town Council agreed to lease us the land we use at Dovecliffe. We must
also consider those members of the general public who do not understand
our sport and see it in a negative way.
Land use will always be difficult for us as a newish club, and we do
need to do as much as possible to limit our effect on the environment
and the general public, so we are always on the lookout for more land to
use and as far as I can see, the more land we can use is a good thing in
all these respects as it would reduce the wear and tear on each venue
and give less cause for complaint from those who do not understand what
we do and the benefits we bring to so many. If anyone hears of the
possibility of further venues (we do insure the landowners from any
possibility of liability) please tell us so that we can investigate.
Some of our members raised at one of our monthly meetings that we ought
to have an overall club champion who is deemed the best rider at the
club, as a committee we instigated this new award and set up a new
points system which should ensure that the person who wins it is the
best overall rider at the club. You may have noticed on the results
sheets, especially if you ride the Club Championship hard route, that
each rider on that route has been given 2 sets of series points, one for
their particular class i.e. Novice etc, and another irrespective of
class for the overall club champion. This new award will also be
presented at our awards evening as mentioned earlier. It was also
suggested recently and voted in favour to pay the entry fee of any
member who rides on behalf of our club in an ACU team trial. The
committee is listening to your opinions so come to the meetings and put
your views forward.
This year, largely organised by Alistair McGrath, the club has
approached Barnsley Childrens Ward at the District General Hospital and
asked them for a list of what they need i.e. toys, electronic games,
etc. and we have used the proceeds from the Ben Carlisle Charity event
to buy as much as possible from the list so we hope the kids will
benefit from our members generosity, over £700 worth of equipment was
presented to the ward on Wednesday the 3rd Dec and an
article in the Barnsley chronicle publicisied our members efforts. We
have also donated £100 to the A.C.U benevolent fund.
Not
many people will know but Roy Robinson of Robinson Engineering has given
the club a donation each year without seeking any publicity or favour
and allowing the club discretion to do what it wants with the donation.
Last year we bought the fold away marquee and this year club felt that
in recognition of this in the coming 2010 season we will name the Club
Championship Series and Trophies for all classes in that series the
Robinson Engineering Club championship. Also Phil Rowett of Chem Jet
is sponsoring the Novice & Beginners series for the 2010 season which
will be the Chem Jet series, “thanks Phil”.
As
a club we have spare events available at Dovecliffe out of the 14 we are
allowed which can be used for practice days so any member or group of
members wishing to run a practice day can inform any club official
giving at least a months notice so that a licence can be obtained and we
will give them our full support.
We
must thank everyone for their contributions to the club in time and work
from the riders who turn out and support the club by riding each week
the helpers who take the entries and peg out for events, the observers
who turn up in all weathers but especially the landowners who often
standout on a limb to give us the use of their land for little reward.
A VERY BIG THANKS TO EVERYBODY.
